How to Celebrate Earth Month & Help the Planet

April is Earth Month—one of our favorite times of year at Lightwave. It marks the true arrival of spring in the Southeast, bringing longer days, more sunshine, and the promise of the seasons ahead. But for us, it’s also a meaningful reflection of where we began.

In 2006, Lightwave was founded from a passion for sustainability and with a mission to bring solar energy to Tennessee. Nearly two decades later, that vision has grown far beyond its roots—expanding across the Southeast to deliver solar and battery backup solutions that help power a more resilient, sustainable future.

Because we love Earth Month so much, we’re excited to share a few simple, practical tips to help you live a little greener, not just in April, but all year long.

1. Conserve Your Energy

Everything takes energy to make, create, and function, whether the energy is your own personal energy, your home’s energy, your car’s, what products or services you use, etc. Be more conscious of what you use and the earth will thank you. Ways to do this include:

  • Make a switch to renewable energy & battery storage to run on clean, sustainable energy from the sun!
  • Walk, bike, carpool, or take the bus!
  • Turn off lights when you leave the room.
  • Unplug electronics when they are not in use.
  • Open the windows when it’s nice out instead of blasting the A/C.
  • Charge devices and run heavy energy loads at non-peak hours.

2. Shop Local

Shopping locally is everything. Supporting those working and living in your community will only help in a positive way. Some places to check out:

  • Try a local farmer’s market this month and get seasonal fruits & veggies.
  • Try a local coffee shop, restaurant, and/or store!
  • Follow your favorite local businesses online and signup for their newsletters to show support.

3. Practice the 4 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot

  • Reduce your waste and use less single-use plastics and other hard-to-recycle materials.
  • Reuse what you have before buying new.
  • Recycle your waste, whether you have curb-side recycling or a convenient center near you.
  • Rot aka compost! Start your own compost bin or support community compost programs like Compost Nashville! A lot of organic material does not need to rot and take up space in our landfills that are over-flowing.

4. Plant More

Planting native pollinator plants and trees can not only help your landscape and garden look more beautiful but it helps the local wildlife and pollinators!

5. Get Outside

Explore your parks, trails, and recreation areas.

6. Donate & Volunteer

Have extra supplies or time in your week to give back? Donate and/or volunteer at your local organizations!
