The Clock Is Ticking on Commercial Solar Incentives

Are you a commercial business – large or small – or a non-profit organization considering solar energy? Now is the time to act.

Recent legislation passed last summer eliminated and restricted key renewable energy tax incentives. While the 30% residential solar tax credit has ended for homeowners, the 30% federal commercial solar tax credit is still available – but only for a limited time. This remaining incentive represents a significant opportunity for businesses and non-profits to reduce energy costs and invest in long-term sustainability.

Why You Should Start Planning Now

Full 30% Tax Credit Through 2027
Projects placed in service by December 31, 2027, are eligible for the full 30% federal tax credit. After that date, projects must meet the begin-construction exception as outlined below.

Begin Construction by July 4, 2026
There is a path to still qualify for the tax credits for projects that begin construction on or before July 4, 2026. These projects can qualify under the exception to the 12/31/2027 placed-in-service cutoff, and (under current continuity safe harbor concepts) generally must be placed in service within four calendar years after the year construction begins—often end of 2029 (if begun in 2025) or end of 2030 (if begun in 2026).

True to form, US tax code can be complicated and confusing, and there are important details that need to be understood to qualify. Please reach out to Lightwave to talk with our consultants about how you can get your commercial tax credits secured for your solar & battery storage projects.
