Where Solar Energy Meets Serving the Community

Sam and John Bosworth run a 501(c)3 non-profit called, Love Learning Music where they provide therapy and education for underserved children. Since 2016, they have been helping those across four U.S. states and internationally all alongside their team of six therapists, 14 teachers, and 3 admin team members.

John & Sam have always been interested in making, creating, and being efficient with their material things because of their love and passion to provide for others in need. When moving to Nashville, they struggled with the over-priced rent and homeownership cost and knew the best way they could serve others would be to live simply and make more room to help others. Due to their busy work life and creative passion towards resiliency, Sam & John thought why not build their dream home in an energy resilient van?

When talking to John about his life’s goals and where it all started, he mentioned how at first he thought he wanted to become an engineer or architect to build houses. He quickly realized something different as life unfolded, stating:

"Instead of building houses, I’m building people. We’ve been able to use that creativity to leverage everything in our life to put us in a better position to do that. For example, we don’t have any home ownership cost so we’re fully free to focus on loving other people.”

The Lightwave team was approached by Sam & John at the beginning of 2025 through a connection to the head of our Special Projects team, Cameron. Although Lightwave does not do installations or maintenance on solar-powered vehicles, our team was interested in helping donate to Sam & John because of their passion for helping others and using renewable energy power in their everyday lives to do so.

Throughout the 2025 year, Cameron, Sam and John worked tirelessly after work hours to make this solar-powered van come to life. The van is now powered by 1,000-watt solar panels on top of the roof with two 460-amp batteries. This helps Sam & John run everything from their laptops, phones and water heater to a tea kettle, cooking stove, and A/C fan unit. Plus, they even have a cell booster to give them wifi.

When asking Sam & John why they decided to go solar for the energy use of this van they stated that they now have no electricity cost and the system is very low maintenance. In the long-run it makes sense on the investment side of things as the sun is a free and renewable energy source. On top of all of that, their work and home is mobile so they can travel as needed for work and adventures along the way.

Apart from their non-profit work, Sam started her own side business where she designed Float 2 Infuse, a versatile tea steeper that can fit into any mug or tumbler. Her passion for this came from her & John’s love of loose leaf tea and the vast healing benefits it has. This way, Sam & John can heal and energize themselves to keep fueling their everyday lives.
