Tesla’s latest Powershare features are bringing electric vehicles, solar energy, and home battery storage closer together, creating exciting new possibilities for energy independence and backup power.
Imagine using your electric vehicle for more than just transportation. What if the energy stored in your vehicle’s battery could also help keep your lights on, your refrigerator running, and essential appliances powered during an outage?
With Tesla’s latest expansion of Powershare technology, this vision is becoming a reality for more homeowners.
In October 2026, Tesla announced an exciting update to its Powershare Home Backup capabilities, expanding the technology beyond the Cybertruck to include compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026. This advancement creates new opportunities for homeowners to make better use of the energy they already have, especially when paired with solar panels and Tesla Powerwall battery storage.
Tesla Powershare is a bidirectional charging technology that allows compatible Tesla electric vehicles to do more than simply receive electricity. Instead, these vehicles can also send stored energy back out to power appliances, equipment, and even your home.
Traditionally, electric vehicles have been designed to draw electricity from the grid or a home's solar energy system to charge their batteries. Powershare introduces a two-way relationship, allowing stored energy from a vehicle to serve as an additional power source.

This technology opens the door to several possibilities, including:
While these capabilities vary depending on the Tesla model, equipment, and location, Powershare represents another step toward making energy more flexible and accessible.
This is where things get especially interesting for homeowners investing in renewable energy.
Solar panels, Tesla Powerwall, and a Powershare-compatible electric vehicle can work together as parts of a more resilient home energy system.
Each serves a different purpose:
Solar panels produce electricity from sunlight, helping reduce reliance on utility-supplied power. During the day, that electricity can power your home, charge your battery storage system, or charge your electric vehicle, depending on your system configuration and available solar production.
A Tesla Powerwall stores electricity for use when solar panels aren't producing enough energy, such as at night or during cloudy weather. With a properly configured backup system, Powerwall can also provide electricity during grid outages.
Powershare introduces another potential layer of backup power by allowing compatible Tesla vehicles to supply electricity to the home.
Instead of relying solely on stationary battery storage during an outage, homeowners can tap into the additional energy stored in their vehicle when it's connected and available.
Together, these technologies create a more flexible approach to managing energy at home.
In the event of a power outage, the biggest advantage of having Powershare is having more energy options available even when the grid goes down.

Tesla's latest Powershare expansion reflects a larger shift in how we think about electricity.
Our homes, vehicles, and energy storage systems are becoming increasingly connected, creating new opportunities to generate, store, and use electricity more efficiently.
For homeowners, that means greater flexibility, more options for backup power, and potentially less dependence on the traditional electrical grid.
